General:
Perennial herb from a stout yellow taproot surmounted by a heavy, somewhat woody stem-base; stems 1 to several, erect, 5-30 cm tall, unbranched, nearly smooth to somewhat long-woolly.
Leaves:
Basal leaves stalked, lanceolate, 4-7 cm long, pinnately lobed to deeply cleft, the lobes round-toothed to entire, the stalks somewhat winged; stem leaves alternate, rather numerous and not much smaller than the basal ones.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a dense, bracted, terminal spike of several to many flowers, the spike compact to elongated, the bracts similar to the leaves but reduced upward; corollas pink to purple, 20-25 mm long, 2-lipped, the upper lip 8-12 mm long, arched, hood-like, beakless but with a pair of slender teeth near the tip, the lower lip 3-lobed; calyces 7-10 mm long, long-woolly, 5-toothed, the teeth triangular, 2-3 mm long; stamens 4, the filaments long-hairy to nearly smooth.
Fruits:
Capsules, lance-oblong, asymmetrical, somewhat flattened and curved, smooth, 12-15 mm long; seeds several.
