General:
Perennial herb from a branched stem-base and a stout taproot; stems ascending to nearly erect, several, silvery hairy, 20-50 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves tufted, broadly lanceolate, stalked, 6-12 cm long, usually silvery-hairy; stem leaves similar, alternate, sometimes with a pair of small basal lobes, progressively reduced, becoming unstalked, silvery-hairy, usually bristly as well.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a several-coiled, 1-sided, short, compact cluster; corollas whitish to lavender or dull purple, 4-7 mm long and wide; calyces hairy, the lobes linear; stamens strongly exserted and hairy near the middle.
Fruits:
Capsules, 2-chambered; seeds 1-3, pitted, 1.5-2.5 mm long.
