General:
Annual herb from slender fibrous roots; stems nearly erect, simple to freely branched, 5-40 cm tall, stiff-hairy; plants hairy.
Leaves:
Basal and lower stem leaves egg- to heart-shaped, 3-parted, 2-6 cm long, 2-6 cm wide, the leaflets lobed and deeply to shallowly round toothed, tips blunt to pointed, the stalks long; earliest basal leaves simple, 3-lobed, smaller than later leaves and withering early; upper stem leaves and bracts unstalked, or nearly so, 3-parted or simple.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of 1 to few-flowered cymes terminal on main stem and branches; flower stalks 1-6 cm long; receptacle long soft-hairy; petals usually 5, distinct, yellow, egg-shaped, 7-10 mm long, 4-8 mm wide, nectary on upper surface, the nectary scale smooth, broadly egg-shaped; sepals 5, bent back, early deciduous, 3-8 mm long, 1.5-3 mm wide, long soft-hairy; stamens 25-50; pistils 10-35.
Fruits:
Achenes, several to many in a globe- to egg-shaped head 5-8 mm long, 6-7 mm wide, the achenes nearly circular, 2-3 mm long, 2-3 mm wide, smooth or sparsely pimpled, strongly flattened, margins thickened; beaks persistent, stout, triangular, 0.4-0.7 mm long, curved.
