General:
Perennial herb from short stem-base with cluster of slender fibrous roots; stems stout, erect, 15-30 cm tall, sparsely-hairy with brown hairs or smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves persistent, somewhat circular, 1-3 cm long, 1-3 cm wide, round-toothed or shallowly 3-lobed and round-toothed, tips round to round-pointed, bases blunt to squared-off, the stalks long; stem leaves 2 or 3, alternate, short-stalked to unstalked, deeply cleft into 3 to 5 lanceolate or egg-shaped lobes.
Flowers:
Inflorescence usually a solitary, terminal flower, the flower stalk brown-hairy; receptacle brown-hairy; petals 5 (6), distinct, yellow, 8-12 mm long, 6-10 mm wide, nectary on upper surface, small, the scale smooth; sepals 5, early deciduous or persistent, 6-8 mm long, 3-6 mm wide, densely brown stiff-hairy; stamens 30-50; pistils many.
Fruits:
Achenes, numerous (50-90) in a cylindric to egg-shaped head 6-7 mm long, 5-6 mm wide, the achenes egg-shaped, 1.8-2.2 mm long, 1.4-1.8 mm wide, smooth or sparsely brown-hairy, not or obscurely keeled; beaks slender, 0.8-1.4 mm long, straight or curved.
