General:
Perennial herb from a strong taproot; stems erect, solitary to several, simple (below the inflorescence), 60-200 cm tall, smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves widely to narrowly oblong or egg-shaped, more or less rounded at the base, the margins slightly wavy, the blades 15-30 cm long, the stalks long; stem leaves alternate, several, similar to basal leaves but reduced upward.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of numerous flowers in a slender panicle; flower stalks jointed below midlength; outer perianth segments 1.5-2 mm long, ultimately reflexed, inner perianth segments mostly 5-9 mm long, broadly heart-shaped, net-veined, usually 1 segment with a small, grain-like swelling.
Fruits:
Achenes, brown, smooth, 3-3.5 mm long.
