Species Information

General:
Caespitose, perennial herb from taproots and stolons, often forming mats; numerous leafy branches, the flowering stems 12-16 cm tall, smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves with 3 tooth-like lobes at apex, the lobes lanceolate to oblong, unstalked, fringed with bristle-like nonglandular hairs, crowded on sterile shoots, 8-12 mm long, persistent; stem leaves 2 to 5, alternate, entire or lower ones lobed, much reduced.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of open, terminal, 1- to 3-flowered clusters; petals creamy white, egg-shaped, unspotted, 5-6.5 mm long, tips rounded; calyces bowl-shaped, joined to ovary for about 1/4 to 1/2 length of lobes, the free hypanthium absent, the lobes 5, egg-shaped to oblong, 3-5 mm long, purplish, smooth, spreading; stamens 10.
Fruits:
Capsules, 4-6 mm long; seeds brown, egg-shaped, about 0.5 mm long, pimpled.

Habitat and Range

Moist rock outcrops, talus slopes and cliffs in the subalpine and alpine zones; rare in the Queen Charlotte Islands, and NW Vancouver Island; endemic.
