Species Information

General:
Evergreen perennial forming cushion-like or loose mats 5-20 cm across.
Leaves:
Lanceolate, 2.5-4 mm long, margins short-fringed to minutely toothed and with yellowish, 0.5-1.2 mm long bristle tips.
Cones:
Unstalked, 4-angled in cross-section, 5-20 mm long, 1-2 mm wide; sporophylls strongly keeled, margins short-fringed to minutely toothed on upper 3/4, abruptly bristled at the tips.
Notes:
Previously treated as a variety or subspecies of S. densa.

Habitat and Range

Moist to dry rocks and shallow soil in open places in the subalpine and alpine zones; infrequent in the Rocky Mountains of BC; N to AK, E to AB and S to CO and ID.
