General:
Perennial herb from a short rhizome; flowering stems erect, 4-15 cm tall, smooth, often purplish in the upper part.
Leaves:
Basal leaves several to many, in fan-like tufts, broadly linear, 2-6 cm long, 2-4 mm wide, usually 5-veined, smooth, sheathing at the base, folded in iris-like fashion, the margins entire; stem leaves 1 or sometimes 2 or 3, bract-like and at or above midlength.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a dense, head-like, terminal cluster of several to many, short-stalked or unstalked flowers; flowers greenish-white tinged with red or purple, cup-shaped, of 6 similar, distinct tepals, the tepals narrowly egg-shaped, 1.5-3 mm long, spreading; stamens 6, anthers often purple; pistil 1, 3-chambered.
Fruits:
Capsules, 3-lobed and 3-beaked, bent down when mature, dark purple, 2-3 mm long; seeds numerous, enclosed in a spongy coat, without appendages.
