General:
Perennial herb from a deep, straw-coloured, fibrous-scaly, nearly globe-shaped, bulb-like corm; flowering stems erect, 20-70 cm tall, slender, smooth.
Leaves:
Basal leaves 1 to 3, linear, keeled, 20-50 cm long, 3-10 mm wide, smooth, sheathing at the base, the margins entire; stem leaves lacking.
Flowers:
Inflorescence a compact to open, terminal umbel of 5 to 20, erect to ascending, more or less equally stalked flowers, above several membranous bracts, the stalks 0.5-4 cm long; flowers light- to deep blue to whitish, vase-shaped to narrowly bell- or top-shaped, of 6 fused segments, 1.5-2.5 cm long; corolla lobes in two petal-like whorls, nearly equalling to longer than the tubes, spreading, the outer 3 narrowly egg-shaped to lanceolate, the inner 3 wider, ruffled; stamens 6; pistil 1, 3-chambered.
Fruits:
Capsules, egg-shaped, stalked; seeds rounded, black.
