General:
Perennial herb from a rhizome, not stoloniferous; stems erect, smooth, 5-15 cm tall.
Leaves:
Basal leaves lanceolate, egg-shaped or wedge-shaped, often purplish, especially on the veins, coarsely few-toothed or -lobed, the blades 1-5 cm long, 0.5-3 cm wide, the stalks 2-12 cm long; stem leaves similar, reduced, round-toothed to deeply toothed; stipules lanceolate, entire to few-toothed.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of single, axillary flowers; petals 5, yellow, the lower petal 5-12 mm long including the 1- to 1.5-mm long spur; the lower 3 usually purplish-brown pencilled, the lateral pair bearded; sepals 5, lanceolate; style heads bearded.
Fruits:
Capsules, short-hairy, 5-12 mm long; seeds brown.
