Distribution of Beroe cucumis in British Columbia in British Columbia

Introduction

Beroe cucumis or Sea Gooseberry is a medium-sized comb jelly that reaches lengths of up to 15 cm and, when mature, is pink--particularly along the comb rows. The body is "radially symmetrical with a secondary bilateral symmetry" (Archiplagos Wildlife Library 2011), and resembles a sac or vase (Marine Species Identification Portal 2011), with eight rows of luminescent combs. It is a predatory species that feeds on plankton, particularly other comb jellies, and "hunt[s] for its food by beating the tiny plates which make up the eight comb rows along its body."(British Marine Life 2011).
