Species Information

Small minnow (usually less than 100 mm FL) with very fine scales (in BC, usually more than 75 along the midline), a single dark midlateral stripe, a relatively short gut with a single main loop, longer jaw and less oblique mouth than northern redbelly dace. For further information on this species, and discussion of similar species, refer to McPhail (2008).

Identification and Subspecies Information

The hybrid of the Northern Redbelly Dace and the Finescale Dace (Chrosomus eos x Chrosomus neogaeus is blue-listed in BC by the BC Conservation Data Centre (BCCDC 2012). It is reported from "lakes, ponds, and sluggish pools of headwaters, creeks, and small rivers; usually over silt and near vegetation" (BCCDC 2012).

Biology

Species Biology

Occurs in lakes, ponds and sluggish pools of headwaters, creeks and small rivers usually over silt and near vegetation. Probably feeds on insects, crustaceans, and plankton (Ref. 1998). Spawning probably occurs in the spring (Ref. 1998). Hybridizes with Phoxinus eos. The hybrids are always females and in some areas are more common that the parental species. Hybrids breed with males of the parental species and consequently can outnumber and even replace one of the parent species.

Distribution

BC Distribution and Notes

The finescale dace is widely distributed in the northeastern part of the province. Its biology is not well known and the products of its hybridization with the northern redbelly dace are of considerable scientific interest
