Black in color. Max length : 15.0 cm TL male/unsexed; common length : 13.0 cm TL male/unsexed;

Biology

Species Biology

Deep-water. Marine; depth range 330 - 5100 m. Meso- and bathypelagic. Found in midwater, usually greater than 610 m. Oviparous, with planktonic eggs and leptocephali. Relatively rare.

Distribution

Circumglobal in all oceans. Eastern Atlantic: Gibraltar to the Azores and Madeira; South Africa. Eastern Indian Ocean: Australia. Southwest Pacific: New Zealand. Eastern Pacific: Oregon, USA to Panama, and Chile. In BC, collected on deepwater surveys, RBCM specimen (Gillespie, pers. comm. 2011).
