Distribution of Eubranchipus bundyi in British Columbia in British Columbia

Introduction


Eubranchipus bundyi is widespread across Canada and the northern USA as far south as the mountains of Arizona (Belk & Brtek, 1995). Its occurrence in British Columbia is little documented, but it has been collected from the Cariboo District (Smithsonian Institution Collections).

The characteristic habitat of this species is the temporary pond (Daborn, 1975), low in dissolved solids (Eriksen & Belk). In western North America, vernal temporary ponds are formed regularly each year in the same depressions from snow accumulated over the winter. If the average duration of a pond is sufficient for Eubranchipus to reach breeding condition, then a population can be expected in the spring of most years (Daborn, 1975).
