Introduction


Silverfish are silvery-coloured wingless insect pests in the Bristletail order of insects (Order Thysanura). They are harmless to humans and feed on carbohydrates such as cereals, books, papers, wallpaper, and other starchy items. They prefer prefer damp and cool places, such as basements, attics, garages, laundry rooms, closets, and storage areas with boxes and/or books.

Silverfish have silvery-metallic scales covering their body and have antennae as long as their body; they can grow to 12 mm in length (head to tip of abdomen). They are reported to live for more than three years and can have more than 50 offspring.

Control can be achieved through a combination of sanitation, de-humidification, habitat modification, and insecticides. Be sure to keep food sealed and in airtight containers, vacuum carpets and upholstery frequently, keep walls and cracks sealed to prevent access, and contact a pest control company for assistance in control.
