Distribution of Philaenus spumarius in British Columbia in British Columbia

Introduction

The Meadow Froghopper, or Meadow Spittlebug, is an introduced species in North America that is native to Europe, North Africa, Russia, Afghanistan and Japan (Wikipedia 2012). It feeds on a variety of plant species and is found in many different habitats. Adults can be a variety of colours (British Bugs 2012).

The spittle is used to cover the nymphs while they eat, and both keeps them from drying out and hides them from predators. It builds up over the summer as the nymph feeds.
