Pisidium lilljeborgi occurs throughout Canada as far north as the southern Arctic islands, throughout Alaska and the northern tier of US states with occurrences farther south in the Rocky Mountains (Clarke, 1981). In Europe, it is considered a northern and alpine species (Ellis, 1978). It is widespread in British Columbia.
This is a common species, and is found in all permanent-water habitats, especially lakes (Clarke, 1981). It is found in fine sand with a scattering of small weeds (Herrington, 1962). Clarke (1973) corroborates this habitat preference, but notes that the substrata inhabited also include mud, clay, and gravel.
