Similar to Hapalogaster mertensii, the northern hairy crab differs by lacking a middle row of hairs on the dorsal face of the right cheliped (This is viewing from front of crab, see photo). Also the rostrum (point between the eyes) of H. grebnitzkii is almost as wide at base as it is long.
