Notes Ephippium of Daphnia pulex. This is the protective chamber containing the resting egg(s), two in the case of D. pulex. This type of egg is produced sexually at a time of deteriorating environmental conditions - in this case, the lake drying up. The ephippium is formed as the posterior-dorsal part of the carapace (see E-Fauna photo 11413), and is subsequently liberated by a moult or by the death of the female. Collected 04 June 2014.
