Comments common name '' yellow-bellied sapsucker'' on the west coast they have a red head nape and throat. sapsuckers do not have barbed tongues and cant get the wood-boring insects from trees. so they drill holes in birch trees or orchard trees and eat the sap and insects that get caught in the sap. this photo shows the back markings.
