Comments Much more common in BC than is its congener H. grebnitzkii, Hapalogaster mertensii differs in having a row of hairs on the middle portion of the dorsal surface of the right claw (when viewed from the front, see photo). This species is also more likely to be encountered in the low intertidal where it prefers rocky areas with little underlying sediment (rockpiles, breakwaters, etc).
