Another large hermit, this species (like the similarly sized P. armatus and P. aleuticus) lives in the largest snails found in the Eastern Pacific. The iridescent sheen on the claws and yellow-green eyes are distinct. In living or fresh specimens there is almost always a maroon stripe running down the palms of the claws.
