Comments The largest of the Eastern Pacific urchins, the red urchin is only occasionally encountered in the low intertidal. Purple forms may be confused with the purple urchin, S. purputaus, but can be distinguished by the larger size and longer spines. Photo taken with a Pentax Optio W10 underwater camera submerged in shallow aquarium.
