This hermit is actually in a completely different family than are all but two others of British Columbia's 28 (or so) species of hermit crab. One easily seen difference is that most other hermit crabs (except for Paguristes ulreyi in the same family) have the claws of different size and shape with the right usually being larger and more robust. In members of the genus Paguristes the claws are pretty much equal in size.
