Just a comment to note that, while this bird adopted the pose usually associated with drying the wings after diving, this young cormorant had not been anywhere near water while I watched it from the ferry at Sturdies Bay, Galiano Island. It was standing in the normal pose when it just opened its wings and continued standing in the same place. There are other hypotheses as to why they do this, perhaps associated with body heat control.
