Juvenile downy woodpeckers have a red crown, which will eventually change to the adult black. This bird has been in the garden for about six weeks, from the time it was fed by its parents in early June to the present, a month later, at the end of July, when it is totally self-sufficient, coming to a suet feeder daily.
