Comments Herring spawning takes place during March and April on the east coast of Vancouver Island. Wildlife, seals, sealions, brant geese, thousands of gulls, sea ducks and shorebirds, gather in great numbers to benefit from waters full of fish eggs. However, vast numbers of eggs are washed up and form huge long, deep windrows at the tideline, and before even reaching the beach, the smell is very noticeable on the approach! Nothing was eating these huge piles of eggs on the beach when this image was taken, although geese and gulls were busy dabbling at the water's edge.
